Rob Leer & The Electric Kids were one of the first Italian Punk Rock/New Wave bands, hailing from Cosenza in south Italy, although in retrospect their earlier recordings sound more like edgy Garage Rock'n'Roll, espousing Punk Rock's energy and its return to 3-minute Rock songs while also incorporating elements from the 1960s: The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix. However this album chronicles both Robert Caruso's a.k.a. Rob Leer development as a songwriter and his moving towards a more original sound, when in London his Rock'n'Roll-rooted style acquired and merged the flavours of Punk Rock, Heavy Metal and Post-Punk Goth. At first The Electric Kids had a revolving-door policy in regard to their line-up. Only when Caruso, followed from Italy by guitarist Fabrizio Ficco, moved for good to London aged 19 and got together with bassist Andy Dunsby and drummer Dave New, The Electric Kids had a stable line-up, cut their best songs and gigged regularly and successfully. They were first based in Brixton, later in north London. This collection has Robert Caruso as a teenage rocker, including his earlier demos recorded in Rome, some recorded single-handed, and The Electric Kids' recordings in London 1985 - 1988. Waiting For You written in 1979 already has some of Caruso's trademarks: the "buzzsaw" guitar, Vox organ, harmonica, metronomic drums. Hon, We'll Rock And Have Fun, Rock For Miles and the ballad Emily Says with Caruso on electric piano are among his first demos, cut live in a Rome studio with members of the Roman Mod band The Arrows, and with "Rob Leer" Caruso still singing in an uncertain English. These songs were Rob Leer & The Electric Kids' often simply called The Rob Leer Band in the beginning live set. Rousing Shock is from Caruso's line-up of The Electric Kids in Rome in 1983-85, notable in particular because of keyboard-player Alessandro Statuto known as Teddy. Almost Grown is a demo from a rehearsal with guitar virtuoso Franco "Shep" Sciancalepore. Twilight is the one song from Waiting For The Light, released on cassette in 1983: a lo-fi "album-concept" of demos recounting a doomed teenage love story in which Caruso fused R&R with synthesizers and drum-machines.During the first years - apart from Caruso and classically-trained bassist Roberto Caporale - The Electric Kids had different line-ups; almost all young Rock musicians in Cosenza, Italy, passed through the band. In 1980 and '81 Antonello Le Pera was the lead guitarist; later from 1982 - and Rob Leer & The Electric Kids' first extended tour - Frank Morris was the band's "guitar hero". Renato Mazzuca was often Robert Caruso's most reliable drummer from 1979 to 1984.From 1985 to 1988 The Electric Kids had a stable line-up in London, with Caruso still as Rob Leer vocals, guitar, organ, harmonica Fabrizio Ficco guitar Andy Dunsby bass and Dave New drums, younger brother of Rich Kids' guitarist Steve New. Later in 1988, Fabrizio Ficco was substituted by Mark Forde on lead guitar. In 1986 and '87 the band cut a series of demos: the earliest ones, such as Red Pills and These Days, produced by Andy Berenyi guitarist of Underneath What at the time. Speed, Indian Summer, Red Pills and Get Crazy would be re-recorded by Caruso for his albums The Best-kept Secret In Rock'n'Roll 2013 and Love And Death 2014. Motor Kid is the song written on commision for RAI TV and performed in Mimmo Rafele's film Primi Amori 1984 by The Electric Kids [Robert Caruso vcls, gtr Francesco Ficco gtr Nino Le Pera bs Cesare Marino drms]. There are some of The Electric Kids' best performances, such as Julie and Flash Up. Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, originally written by Caruso for his friend Nico the ex-Velvet Underground singer, and Rain are demos cut by Caruso on his own. New Fanny's Week the title is reminiscent of a newspaper\'s name as the song is the diary of a 16-year-old girl dealing with the problems of growing up used to be The Electric Kids' gigs' closing number, sometimes developing into a prolonged jam of feedback and distortion as in the recording included here, which closes this album as it did Rob Leer & The Electric Kids' now legendary gigs in the 1980s. - с лучшим качеством и звучанием!
